Look at the work

A small millstone connects the meadow to the curtain of trees

The foreground, low and open, is animated by touches of white, pink, blue and yellow which suggest the flowers without detailing them. The millstone forms a warm accent in the center; behind it, the trees create a darker and irregular frieze.

The sky occupies a wide upper band where blue mixes with pink and lilac. These cold colors descend into the meadow and into the shadows of the trees, while the yellows of the millstone and certain grasses circulate the light.

W1247 observes the landscape before the monumental series of Meules: the gerbier remains small, integrated into the meadow and subject to the atmosphere of Giverny.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An agricultural motif still included in the landscape

The millstone does not yet have the dominant canvas size of 1890 -1891. It serves as a point of balance between the clear field and the wooded mass, which makes it possible to follow the evolution of the pattern in Monet.

02

Three strips made permeable

Meadow, trees and sky could form rigid areas. Monet connects them by the repetition of roses, blues and yellows, as well as by a line of trees whose irregular tops cut out the atmosphere.

03

Fukushima's version, W1247

Inventory 5350-8400060, dating from 1890 and the Wildenstein reference 1247 identify this composition, shown in 2026 in the exhibition at the Giverny Museum of Impressionism.

Composition01

A small but decisive millstone

Its central position could make it static, but its irregular outline and the touches surrounding it integrate it into the movement of the field. Its size must remain modest compared to trees.

Color02

A pink, blue and lilac sky

The light does not rest on a uniform blue. The pink and purple passages give the sky a soft temperature which is reflected in the flowers and shadows.

Matter03

Flowers suggested in fragments

Small light touches are spaced on a green and blue base. Their distribution must remain discontinuous to preserve the impression of a living meadow rather than a decorative carpet.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal landscape is suitable for a dining room, living room or bedroom. A cream wall, light wood and old pink or gray blue textiles prolong the atmosphere without diminishing the golden accent of the millstone.
