Look at the work

The masts and hulls fill an almost monochrome port

The two boats are seen from three quarters and almost touch each other in the center. The quay and the houses of Honfleur form a narrow strip on the left; on the right, a succession of masts indicates the depth of the basin without opening a vast panorama.

The sails are slumped into heavy gray and brown triangles. In the water, the hulls become black vertical reflections, cut by a few white flashes. A touch of orange-red at the top of a mast animates this deliberately retained range.

The port is reduced to its essential structures: two masses of wood, a network of masts and their unstable reflection.

The format brings boats together and allows masts to cross the sky. The impression is not that of a general view of the port, but of an observation at the dock.

The boats remain distinct by their edges, their ropes and their sails, but their blacks meet in the center. This mass supports the entire composition.

A clear sky worked in matter

Gray, cream and broken whites are placed in visible touches around the masts. Their vibration makes the humid light of the pool without bright blue.

The shell on the left widens towards the viewer; the one on the right appears more sideways. Their difference creates depth.

The ropes structure the light spaces

The black and oblique lines cut through the sky without enclosing it. Their finesse must contrast with the thick masses of the sails.

The reflections remain darker than the sky

They extend masts and hulls downward, but dissolve quickly in the undulations of the harbor.
