Flags swollen by the wind punctuate the width of the painting; umbrellas, dresses and signs respond to each other in small touches. Monet chooses a low viewpoint on the boards to capture the seaside resort like an outdoor spectacle.

The white tent shares the beach and the promenade

A light canvas construction occupies the left middle. Its triangular roof, its pole and the French flag form an immediate landmark. Around, visitors stand on the sand or reach the boards, grouped in dark blue, white, pink and green silhouettes.

On the right, the hotels and their terraces rise in tiers. Striped staircases, balustrades and several awnings connect the buildings to the promenade. A woman in a pale blue dress walks in the foreground, while the long lines of the boards converge towards the central crowd.

The painting does not stare at a still walk: flags, clouds, parasols and characters circulate the wind over its entire surface.

A big sky that animates architecture

Blue occupies almost half of the canvas. White clouds are placed there by thick gestures and flags extend their movement into built-up areas.

Its almost white mass separates the open beach on the left from the denser promenade on the right. It catches the eye without erasing the many groups that surround it.

Converging obliques in the foreground

The lines of the boards, the staircase and the shadows of the figures advance in slightly different directions. Their convergence establishes the depth and sensation of a moving crowd.

The single reference documents the Wildenstein 157a version kept in a private collection. The public domain file of 4,500 × 3,162 px was reduced to 3,000 × 2,108 px, without enlargement, then encoded in WebP.

Flags as punctuation

The large French flag stands out above the tent, but several smaller pavilions also cross the horizon. Their different angles make the direction of the wind noticeable.

Color02

Warm and cold whites

Tent, clouds, dresses and facades do not share the same white. Monet varies cream, blue gray and very pale pink to separate materials in bright light.

A direct and visible material

The clouds are widely brushed, the figures reduced to a few signs and the buildings more structured. These degrees of finish give the look its speed.

The railway had made Trouville quickly accessible from Paris. Monet paints the hotels, terraces and elegant clothing that characterize this new seaside leisure activity.

Presented in London in Monet & Architecture

The painting appears in the National Gallery exhibition in 2018. Its documentation specifies the format, provenance and its belonging to a particular Milanese collection.

A provenance passed through the major galleries

The documentation notably mentions Durand-Ruel, Georges Petit and Gabriel Weil-Martignan, then a sale at Christie's in London in December 1997 before the current collection.
