Claude Monet · Fresselines · 1889 · W1220
Two rocky slopes plunge towards the Creuse, reduced to a blue ribbon at the bottom of the ravine, while a clear path crosses the opposite slope. Painted in Fresselines in 1889, this oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 81.5 cm is kept in the museum Beaux-Arts de Reims under number 907.19.192 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1220.

Look at the work
The nearby slope occupies the left in a dark mass; the one opposite stretches diagonally towards the center. The river appears only in the meantime. A winding path and a few trees on the ridge structure this steep depth.
Red brown, green, purple and blue intersect without fixed contours. The keys change direction along the slopes: vertical in the walls, oblique on the embankments and more horizontal in the water.
In W1220, Monet does not describe every rock: he makes the slope felt by the orientation and density of the colored touches.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The view plunges into a deep valley. The sky is reduced so that the topography, the river and the succession of slopes become the real subject.
The clear line that winds down the opposite slope reveals the distance and inclination of the terrain. Without it, colors could almost be read as an abstract surface.
Red and purple soils appear between the vegetation. They give the ravine its structure and warm a still fresh light.
Reference image
Only one exact image of W1220 is used. The real WebP measures 2,200 × 1,745 px and allows the construction of slopes to be observed without artificial enlargement.
The blue of the watercourse must remain tight and dark. Widening it would modify the shape of the ravine and artificially bring the bottom closer together.
The brush gestures follow the accidents of the relief. Standardizing them would remove the impression of walls, embankments and vegetation.
The clear line is interrupted by colorful passages. A too clear route would seem added to the landscape instead of being integrated into it.
Documented benchmarks
The Reims Museum of Fine Arts documents Les Ravins de la Creuse, oil on canvas painted in Fresselines in 1889, 65.5 × 81.5 cm, signed Claude Monet. 89 bottom left.
The painter settled for several weeks in the Creuse and simultaneously led several landscapes in order to follow rapid variations in light and weather.
The work passed to Durand-Ruel in 1890, then to Louis Guyotin and to the collection of Henry Vasnier in 1891. It entered the museum with its legacy of 1907.
The museum notice links the painting to the Monet-Rodin exhibition of 1889, an important moment when Monet's recent landscapes meet Rodin's sculpture.
