Under a pearl gray sky, patches of ice slowly drift across the Seine. A wooded island is reflected in the center, almost erased by fog and cold. Monet deliberately reduces the contrasts to make you feel the silence of winter, but the surface remains rich in blues, mauves and pale yellows.
Look at the work
The horizon crosses the painting slightly above the middle. The island and its bouquet of trees form the central core, doubled by a vertical reflection. The ice cubes stretch into white bands and lead the gaze from left to right to the misty shore.
The sky combines gray, lilac and very light blue. In the water, the same tones become colder and mix with a few greens. The ice cubes receive white impasto broken with yellow; their relief contrasts with the smoother surface of the river.
W1334 gives the debacle a calm force: the ice is distinguished less by the white than by its material in the face of the silent water.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Museum Barberini places this painting in Monet's last great exploration of ice. Ten versions look at Bennecourt and three at Port-Villez. Each painting varies the stage of thawing, the time and the visibility of the banks.
Tradition often represents drifting ice as a threatening force. Monet, on the contrary, chooses a delicate range and almost still water. The feeling of cold comes from the proximity of values and the gradual disappearance of the landscape.
The museum emphasizes the difference in texture: the plates are painted in relief, while the water and reflection remain smoother. A faithful reproduction must make this opposition tactile without uniformly thickening the entire canvas.

Only one reference image is used. The official Museum Barberini file measures 3,000 × 1,796 px and has been converted into a real WebP to this definition, without artificial enlargement.
Sky, bank and river form large horizontal strata. The bouquet of trees and its reflection introduce the only significant vertical axis, giving meditative stability to the scene.
The whites are still colored. The very pale yellow catches a few ice cubes, while the mauve and blue build the distant masses and prevent the fog from becoming neutral.
The plates require more loaded and discontinuous paint. Atmospheric areas can remain thin, crossed and flexible in order to maintain the veiled depth.
Documented benchmarks
The Museum Barberini preserves this painting under the number MB-Mon-28 and documents it as Wildenstein 1334.
This oil on canvas from 1893 measures 60 × 100 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 93" at the bottom right.
Durand-Ruel bought the painting directly from Monet before his visit to several collections in Boston. In 2016, the work joined the Hasso Plattner collection presented at the Museum Barberini.
Monet paints from the bank of Bennecourt, on the other side of the Seine from Giverny. The January frost then the rapid thaw left him little time to record the successive states of the river.
