A massive millstone occupies the left of the snowy field and casts a blue-purple shadow all the way to the foreground. The light catches its top and makes the snow turn pink. This 65.4 × 92.1 cm oil on canvas, kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is Wildenstein 1279.

Look at the work

Snow transforms a millstone into a volume of light

The pattern is off-center and cuts the blue line of the hills. Its dark base sinks into the snow, while its top receives a yellow and pink light. On the right, the silhouettes of several smaller millstones extend the subject into the distance.

The foreground is never white: pale pink, cobalt blue, purple and yellow green respond to it. The very broad shadow connects the millstone to the lower edge of the canvas. The houses and trees of Giverny remain secondary, but they anchor the study of light in a real landscape.

W1279 contrasts a dense object with an almost luminous field: the millstone receives the sun, but it is its colored shadow which organizes the entire composition.

The first series presented as a whole

Between 1890 and 1891, Monet devoted around thirty paintings to millstones near his house. Fifteen were presented together at Durand-Ruel in May 1891, a decisive affirmation of the principle of series.

The effect rather than the subject

The wheel changes less than the light that envelops it. Monet uses its stable shape to compare snow, shade, low sun and air color at different times.

An off-center and very close grinding wheel

The main volume should not be reduced or placed back in the center. Its weight on the left gives its full opening to the light field and the small grinding wheels at the bottom.

Color02

Polychrome snow

The pink, lilac, blue and yellow passages must remain distinct. Neutralizing them in white or gray would make the sun effect sought by Monet disappear.

Matter03

A broad shadow with vibrant edges

Shadow is neither black nor geometric. It is constructed in touches of blue and purple which gradually mix with the lit snow.
