A mass of trees occupies the right bank of the Seine and is reflected almost entirely in the water. On the left, the river opens towards Vétheuil, reduced to a few houses and poplars under a pink and blue sky. Painted around 1880, this 58.4 × 73 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Portland Museum of Art under number 1998.95 and corresponds to Wildenstein 610.

Look at the work

A dark bank frames the light mirror of the Seine and leads towards Vétheuil

The right plant mass descends from the upper edge to the reflection, forming a large, almost continuous oval. On the left, a clear gap opens the river towards the village; an isolated tree and a few verticals mark the transition between near and far.

The sky and water share turquoise blues, pinks and whites, but the river surface receives more vertical touches. The deep greens of the bank are crossed with yellow and blue to keep the vegetation bright.

The landscape is built around a simple contrast: the dense screen of trees on the right and the space of air and water that opens up on the left.

The large dark mass could unbalance the canvas, but its reflection extends it downwards and the light gap on the left responds to it over the entire height.

The houses, trunks and their reflections are very small. Their relative precision is enough to locate Vétheuil without diverting attention from the surface of the river.

Reflections that change depending on the depth

Under the trees, the water turns green and tight; to the left, it lightens into blue and pink. This variation guides the gaze towards the distance.
