Water and trees retain light from the downpour

A group of trees appears almost in the center of the Seine. The trunks multiply in the reflections, darker and more supple than the real shapes. On the left as on the right, the open water is crossed by touches of yellow, blue, pink and gray which make the light unstable.

Behind this nearby mass, the houses of Vétheuil stretch at the foot of a green hillside. The village is partially veiled by branches and humidity; the pink clouds still present above the hill explain the coexistence of the sun and recent rain.

The main subject is neither the village nor the trees, but the returned light: it fragments the reflections, colors the clouds and brings together all the planes.

A plant screen in the foreground

The trees deliberately cut off the view of the village. This obstruction gives the viewer the feeling of being at the water's edge and creates a more immediate depth than a clear panorama.

The trunks reappear in the Seine, but their shapes are stretched and broken by the horizontal keys. The repetition remains readable without becoming a rigid mirror.

A shared light

The hill receives yellow greens, the village light roses and the water ivory shards. These colorful reminders circulate the sun throughout the composition.
