Claude Monet · A Harvest Field circa 1879 · Kunsthaus Zürich

Poppy field near Vétheuil W536hand painted reproduction

A field of poppies fills the foreground to the Seine and the village of Vétheuil. Four figures disperse among the flowers, while the church dominates the houses on the opposite bank. Monet contrasts the brilliance of the reds with the large gray-blue sky to give the landscape its depth and movement.

Look at the work

The red of the flowers leads to Vétheuil

Poppies do not form a regular carpet. Monet divides them into red accents of varying sizes, more distinct in the foreground then tighter towards the river. Mixed greens, blues and whites prevent the field from becoming a flat surface.

Four silhouettes punctuate the slope and give the scale of the site. Beyond a dark strip of vegetation and the Seine, Vétheuil stretches out on the hill. The church forms the main vertical point, taken up more discreetly by the poplars located on the left.

The gaze crosses the field thanks to the successive figures and reds, then finds a stopping point in the bell tower before going back towards the sky.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Depth by density

The flowers are larger and spaced near the bottom edge, then become a tight vibration. This change builds distance without rigid lines of perspective.

02

Figures taken in color

Their light or blue clothing makes them visible, but their contours mingle with grasses and flowers. They inhabit the field rather than pose in front of it.

03

An active and bright sky

Gray, white and bluish clouds are worked in superimposed touches. Their movement responds to the swarming of the field while maintaining a clearer value.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The image corresponds to canvas BU 0071, W536, preserved by the Emil Bührle Foundation and presented on long-term loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich. Its definition makes the four figures, the silhouette of Vétheuil and the variations of the field readable.

Composition01

A horizon placed high

Most of the format returns to the field. The village and the sky occupy a tighter strip which gives breadth to the rise of flowers.

Color02

Reds never isolated

Each poppy dialogues with cold greens, pinks, white touches and earths. This diversity maintains the natural vibration.

Matter03

A touch adapted to each shot

The flowers receive short, punctual touches; the village is more melted, while the sky is organized into wide passages.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Kunsthaus Zürich identifies this view under the inventory BU 0071 and the reference Wildenstein 536; it belongs to the Emil Bührle Collection Foundation.

Viewpoint01

From Moisson to Vétheuil

Monet looks at the village from the opposite bank of the Seine. This position explains the layout of the field, the river then the houses on the hill.

Signature02

Claude Monet, bottom right

The signature is placed in the tones of the field, without breaking the continuity of the vegetation in the foreground.

Presentation03

Long-term loan to the Kunsthaus

The 73 × 92 cm painting is attached to the Emil Bührle Collection and has been listed at the Kunsthaus Zürich under inventory BU 0071 since 2021.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the irregularity of poppies and their gradual decrease in depth.
  • Place the four figures with their own scale and colors.
  • Maintain the Vétheuil church as a vertical landmark without hardening the village.
  • Balance the red of the field with the blue grays and moving whites of the sky.
