Rocks in Belle-Île, Port-Domois W1101hand painted reproduction

In Port-Domois, the coast of Belle-Île appears as a vertical architecture of cliffs and needles. A channel of dark water sinks between the rocks, the foam illuminates their bases and a changing sky closes the upper part. Painted in 1886, this oil on canvas measuring 81.3 × 64.8 cm is kept at the Cincinnati Art Museum under number 1985.282 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1101.

Look at the work

A vertical format for falling cliffs towards the Atlantic

The large wall on the left occupies almost the entire height, while two needles stand on the right. Between these masses, a narrow opening reveals the sea further away. The tight framing transforms the coast into a monumental passage.

The rocks mix red-brown, purple, green and gray in short touches. The water alternates deep blue, turquoise and foam white. The clear values of the sky and waves cut out the silhouettes without resorting to a continuous line.

The height format does not show any more sky: it is mainly used to measure the power of the walls, from the foam to the top of the rocks.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A visual entrance through the channel

The dark water in the foreground tightens between the formations. It guides the eye towards the clear opening at the bottom and gives the site an almost theatrical depth.

02

Rocks built by colored facets

Violets, greens, ochres and reds juxtapose on the stone. These temperature changes describe the hollows and illuminated sides more surely than an outline.

03

Foam as a line of force

The discontinuous whites surround the rock bases and connect the different planes. Their rhythm makes you feel the movement of the ocean around obstacles.

The single reference image comes from a Google Art Project file of 3,292 × 4,133 px. It has been converted into a real WebP of 2,390 × 3,000 px for precise zoom.

Composition01

Maintain the narrowness of the central passage

The water space between the cliffs must remain compressed to maintain the monumentality specific to this W1101 version.

Color02

Preserve the contrast between stone and foam

Whites should not cover the sea; they remain concentrated in contact with rocks and at the top of waves.

Matter03

Keep the purple shades of the cliffs

They reflect the humid light of Belle-Île and avoid a uniformly brown interpretation of the rock.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Cincinnati Art Museum documents Rocks at Belle-Île, Port-Domois, oil on canvas from 1886, 81.3 × 64.8 cm, inventory 1985.282 and catalog Wildenstein 1101.

Stay01

Prolonged work on Belle-Île in 1886

Monet arrives in September for an initially brief stay, but stays more than two months to study the cliffs and the incessant changes of the sea.

Location02

Port-Domois on the wild coast

The pattern belongs to the rocky sector of the southwest coast of Belle-Île. Monet multiplies the points of view and adapts his framing to natural formations.

Acquisition03

Entered the museum in 1985

The work is numbered 1985.282 and was acquired through the Fanny Bryce Lehmer Endowment and the Edwin and Virginia Irwin Memorial.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1101 version
  • The vertical format of Port-Domois
  • The channel between the cliffs
  • The foam whites at the foot of the rocks

A palette designed with the room
