Look at the work

The last rural Montmartre at the edge of a bright path

The path starts from the lower left corner and narrows behind the fence. This diagonal leads the eye towards the gardens, while the vertical shelter closes the right half.

The sky occupies almost half of the canvas. Its lilac blues and grays move in large touches, opposed to the dense greens of the foliage and the yellows of the ground.

Abri à Montmartre F264a is an oil on canvas of approximately 35.6 × 27.3 cm painted in Paris around 1886. It is kept at the Legion of Honor under the 1965.28 inventory.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The small canvas puts three very different surfaces in tension: an almost abstract sky, the steep facade of the shelter and a path whose yellow and blue touches accelerate the depth.

01

The fence draws perspective

The white stakes gradually approach to the bottom. Their irregular rhythm gives a precise measurement to the path and separates the cultivated space from the path.

02

Sunflowers mask architecture

Their dark leaves and yellow flowers rise in front of the boards. Vegetation blurs the geometry of the shelter and makes the garden more lively than the building.

03

The sky is a moving matter

Oblique touches of lilac, blue and gray cover the upper part. They suggest changing weather without describing clouds with closed contours.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco preserve this view of Montmartre under number 1965.28; the composition is also known as number F264a.

Montmartre

A campaign on the threshold of Paris

In the 1880s, gardens, mills and small buildings still remained on the mound. Van Gogh observes this landscape as urbanization begins to transform it.

Collection

A legacy from Frederick J. Hellman

The painting entered the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco by bequest from Frederick J. Hellman and received the number 1965.28.

Pattern

Sunflowers before Arles

The tall yellow flowers appear here in their garden environment. They precede the famous bouquets painted in Arles in 1888 and 1889.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the deep breathing of the sky, the clear diagonal of the path, the rhythm of the fence, the blue-gray planks of the shelter and the sunflowers standing in the center.

  • The wide touches of lilac and gray from the sky
  • The bluish yellow path that leaks to the left
  • The white fence with irregular stakes
  • The blue gray vertical boards of the shelter
  • Dark leaves and flowers of sunflowers
