Two life-size figures move the beach to the foreground

Camille, left, tilts her face slightly under a flowered hat and holds a blue-purple parasol. Her light dress occupies almost the entire lower half. On the right, Madame Boudin reads under a black parasol; her dark coat forms a powerful counterweight.

Between the two women, an empty chair opens a narrow escape towards the sand, the sea and a few silhouettes. The large areas of white, blue and black remain covered with visible touches which convey the brilliance of the sun as much as the cloudy passages.

The proximity of the models does not eliminate the sea air: the sky, parasols and fabrics all seem to be subject to the same wind.

The dresses stand out from the field and the bodies are not fully described. This proximity distinguishes the canvas from the more distant walkers' friezes painted by Eugène Boudin.

The chair, the strip of sand and the tiny distant figures are enough to move the space between the two main masses back.

Whites constructed by contrasts

Camille's dress mixes gray, blue and cream; its shine depends on the proximity of the black coat and the cold parasol.

Trouville after Monet's marriage

Monet spent several weeks in Trouville with Camille and their son Jean during the summer of 1870. There he created nine views combining the coastline with modern resorts.

The woman on the left is Camille; his partner is generally identified as the wife of Eugène Boudin, friend of Monet who also works in Trouville.

Collection03

Purchase of the Courtauld fund in 1924

The painting was acquired by the National Gallery thanks to the Courtauld Fund in 1924, then transferred from the Tate Gallery in 1961.
