Grindstones near Chailly, rising sun W55ahand painted reproduction

In a format twice as wide as it is tall, four dark millstones line up on a meadow still caught in shadow. On the left, the rising sun shines near the horizon and spreads a yellow, pink and orange glow under long bluish clouds. Painted in 1865, this early work already shows Monet busy capturing a moment of light rather than describing every detail of the landscape.

Look at the work

The width of the sky transforms four millstones into landmarks before dawn

The millstones occupy a narrow strip in the middle of the canvas. The largest, slightly off-center to the right, forms a dark pyramid; the others decrease towards the edges and accentuate the extent of the field. Some trees and silhouettes of buildings appear very low on the horizon, almost absorbed by the light.

The sky dominates the composition. Horizontal blue-gray clouds overlap above a yellow and pink zone which intensifies around the sun. The meadow, treated in muted greens and browns, receives thin clear passages: dawn reaches the landscape without removing humidity or coolness from the shade.

Long before the famous Giverny series, Monet already understood that a simple millstone could serve as a stable measure for transformations of sky and light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A panorama built around a point of light

The sun is placed far to the left and not in the center. The low lines of the field and the clouds lead towards it, while the staggering of the millstones brings the gaze back to the entire width of the canvas.

02

Dark but never uniform masses

Each wheel contains greens, browns, blues and a few warmer touches. These differences make their volume and distinguish them from the field without resorting to continuous black contours.

03

The transitional moment as a real subject

The light has not yet spread across the entire meadow. The contrast between the incandescent horizon and the cold foreground fixes this brief passage between night and day, a theme which will become central in Monet's work.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to the Meules near Chailly, rising sun, 1982.20 inventory of the San Diego Museum of Art and Wildenstein number 55a. The reference of 800 × 377 px is kept without artificial enlargement in a real WebP file.

Composition01

The main grinding wheel remains off-center

Its summit is placed to the right of the middle, in counterpoint to the sun located on the left. Moving one of these two poles would reduce the tension that drives this very elongated format.

Color02

The bright horizon has several temperatures

Pale yellow changes to orange, pink then bluish gray. A uniform yellow band would cause the subtle progression of dawn and the thickness of clouds to be lost.

Matter03

The field retains traces of light

Even in the darkest part, small touches of green and light ocher separate the planes. They must remain discreet to suggest damp grass without transforming the foreground into a lit surface.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1865, this oil on canvas measures 30 × 60 cm. It is kept at the San Diego Museum of Art under the 1982.20 inventory and listed as Wildenstein 55a.

Stay01

Monet worked around Chailly in 1865

That year, Monet joined Renoir, Sisley and Bazille in the Chailly-en-Bière region, near the Fontainebleau forest. The group paints directly in front of the motif and explores the changes in light in the fields and undergrowth.

Atelier02

A work long kept by the painter

The San Diego Museum of Art indicates that this experimental study was neither exhibited nor sold during the first period concerned and that it remained in Monet's studio. Its free invoice testifies to research carried out outside the expectations of the Salon.

Anticipation03

Twenty-five years before the Meules de Giverny

The motif precedes the series painted near Giverny in 1890 -1891 by about a quarter of a century. Here, the millstones still belong to a vast landscape; However, they already provide stable shapes against which to measure a fleeting luminous effect.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the very elongated panoramic ratio of the canvas.
  • Keep the sun low and off-center to the left.
  • Differentiate the four millstones without identifying their contours.
  • Keep the meadow colder and darker than the horizon.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This panoramic landscape is suitable above a sideboard, console or bed. A soft smoked oak, bronze or black frame extends the millstones; a linen, powder pink or blue gray wall reveals morning light.
