In the morning light, Rouen Cathedral is tinged with blue, purple and pale yellow. The large tower remains in cold shadow while the portal and the reliefs on the right capture a warmer light. Monet thus makes the monument appear not as an immutable mass, but as a surface transformed at every moment by the atmosphere.
Look at the work
The very close framing cuts the top of the tower and part of the facade. The left half forms a large cold, vertical block; on the right, the pinnacles, statues and the portal fragment into lighter touches. This asymmetry reflects the movement of light on the monument.
The creamy yellow sky appears in the rare spaces left free around the architecture. It warms the stone projections, while the hollows remain blue or purple. The whole appears luminous without losing the density of the Gothic facade.
W1347 shows a cathedral caught between two temperatures: the blue shadow of the tower and the stone already golden in the morning.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet uses a high viewpoint close to the monument, from a rented room facing the cathedral. The narrowness of the street explains the monumental framing and the impossibility of showing the building as a whole.
The light does not come from a represented sun. It can be read in the transition between the blue-purple of the shadows and the pinkish yellow of the illuminated parts. Each brush cover measures a change in temperature on the stone.
The Fondation Beyeler keeps this painting under number 82.2. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 94" at the bottom left and corresponds to number 1347 of the Wildenstein catalog.

The dark tower dominates the left. The more jagged facade extends to the right and descends towards the portals. The reproduction must maintain this difference in weight without closing the light passages.
Cold shadows contain warm touches, and lit areas retain blue. This mixture prevents the facade from dividing into two flat areas.
Arcatures, statues and pinnacles emerge by accumulation of thick marks. Their accuracy comes from color ratios and not a continuous dark outline.
