Claude Monet · 1892 -1894 · Cardiff NMW A 2482 · W1323
At sunset, the Rouen portal is covered in pink, blue gray and pale ocher. The sculptures barely emerge from thick material, while the portals sink into shadow. Preserved in Cardiff under the inventory NMW A 2482, this canvas corresponds to Wildenstein 1323.

Look at the work
The frontal framing brings the facade closer together until the towers are cut. The rose, the galleries and the portals remain the main landmarks, but their precision varies depending on the light: the upper parts dissolve, the lower openings gain density.
Monet mixes powder roses with bluish grays, then places a few orange touches on the reliefs. The facade seems both massive and unstable. This tension is at the heart of the series: an ancient architecture becomes the recording of a luminous moment.
In W1323, the sunset does not only color the cathedral: it redistributes its volumes between pink, blue and shadow.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Museum Wales keeps this oil on canvas measuring 100 × 65 cm under the inventory NMW A 2482. Wildenstein number 1323 and its particular harmony allow it to be distinguished from other portals.
The museum specifies that this painting belongs to the group presented in Paris at Durand-Ruel. The exhibition shows how Monet transforms the repetition of a motif into a systematic study of light.
Gwendoline Davies purchased the work in Paris in December 1917. She bequeathed it with her collection to the museum in 1952, making this version a major milestone in the Welsh Impressionist collections.
Reference image
Only one image is used: the exact view of W1323 made available by Museum Wales, preserved as a real WebP of 1920 × 2911 px, without artificial enlargement.
The upper and side boundaries cut through the architecture. This proximity accentuates the monumentality and forces the eye to explore the material rather than contemplating an entire building.
The palette must retain its intermediate shades. Pink is neither bright nor decorative: it arises from proximity to cold grays and small areas of warmer light.
The reliefs receive a fragmented paste, while some shadows are more melted. These differences move the stone forward or backward without closed contours.
Documented benchmarks
Museum Wales documents this 100 × 65 cm canvas under the inventory NMW A 2482; the catalog raisonné gives it the Wildenstein number 1323.
This version is dated 1892 -1894. Its subtitle highlights a symphony of gray and pink specific to the observed effect.
The painting entered the collection of Gwendoline Davies in 1917, then the Welsh national collections through her bequest of 1952.
The museum notice indicates the elaborate setting that accompanies the work. This historical presentation recalls the decorative and institutional fortune acquired very early by the series.
