A wide stretch of Seine reflects a pale yellow, pink and blue-gray sky. The Argenteuil bank forms a narrow strip in the middle of the canvas: low houses, trees, chimneys and bell towers appear as distant signs. Monet frames this opening with darker plant masses and lets the water occupy the foreground, where each horizontal touch transforms the color of the sky into vibration.
Look at the work
The foreground is almost entirely aquatic. Blue-gray, mauve and green bands intersect with cream and pink highlights. On the left, a dark bank advances slightly; on the right, deeper foliage closes the field without preventing the eye from reaching the center.
In the distance, the bell tower stands out among the Argenteuil buildings. The buildings are not described with architectural precision: a few verticals and rectangles are enough to evoke the city. Above, the clouds remain thin and luminous, as if extended into the water by a succession of horizontal touches.
The interest of the painting lies less in the urban panorama than in the luminous interval where sky, city and river respond to each other.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The bank crosses the composition near its median axis. This choice could produce a rigid separation, but Monet breaks it with the trees, the bell tower and the reflections which constantly connect the top and the bottom.
They don't exactly reproduce every shape on the bank. Rather, parallel keys capture changes in value and temperature, giving the water a self-contained, slightly quivering presence.
The silhouettes of houses and chimneys appear behind still vegetal banks. This coexistence is characteristic of the motifs that Monet observes during his stay: a landscape of leisure and nature already crossed by urban expansion.

The reference image corresponds to Argenteuil, 1874, listed as Wildenstein 322 and kept at the Artizon Museum. Its available native definition of 1055 × 647 px has been preserved as a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
Deep greens, browns and blues remain differentiated. Flexible openings and edges prevent these masses from cutting off river space.
Pale yellows and light pinks circulate among the bluish grays. They must remain subtle to illuminate the scene without transforming the atmosphere into a spectacular sunset.
Some are long and calm, others short and lighter. Their irregularity makes the current and reflections felt without drawing repetitive waves.

Dated 1874, this oil on canvas measures 42 × 70 cm. It is kept at the Artizon Museum in Tokyo and listed in the Wildenstein catalog under number 322.
In 1874, Monet participated in the exhibition organized in Nadar's former studio. His Argenteuil landscapes from the same period show his attention to the momentary effects of light and modern life on the banks of the Seine.
The city offers the artist direct access to the river, bridges, sailboats and neighboring countryside. In this view, the panorama is deliberately reduced to a distant shore to allow air and water to dominate.
The Argenteuil subject exists in numerous compositions. The format of 42 × 70 cm, the city line in the center and the bell tower visible on the bank make it possible to identify this canvas preserved in Tokyo.
