Navy, night effect W71hand painted reproduction

Under a blue-black sky torn by the light of the moon, a sailboat advances in the foreground while a dark vapor stands out on the left. The lit lighthouse responds to the white bursts of the sky and the reflections that cross the sea. This early work shows Monet confronting a rare subject in his painting: the shapes, movements and light sources of a port observed at night.

Look at the work

The hidden moon, the lighthouse and the wakes circulate light in the night

The large sailboat in the foreground is almost black, but its sail receives some purple and brown passages. Its dark reflection descends into rough water of white, blue and ocher. On the left, the steam and its smoke widen the scene and introduce a lower, heavier and distinctly industrial silhouette.

The moon itself remains hidden by clouds. Its presence can be read in the white patches that pierce the sky and in the long, clear opening near the horizon. To the right, the lighthouse light produces a warmer yellow dot and a distinct reflection, allowing natural light and artificial light to be compared.

Monet does not draw the night by black: he constructs it with blues, purples, browns and shards of white which make the wind, smoke and waves visible.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A monumental sailboat placed at the edge of the viewer

The hull and sail almost cut the right part of the composition. This proximity gives a powerful scale to the scene and creates an immediate depth towards the steam and the lighthouse.

02

Two light sources of different nature

Moon gaps are cold, irregular and scattered by clouds. On the contrary, the lighthouse forms a small, more concentrated yellow signal, accompanied by a vertical reflection in the water.

03

The knife and the brush serving movement

The museum highlights the unusual combination of palette and brush. Light impasto hangs the tops of waves and the edges of clouds, while wider passages unite the large blue areas.

Composition01

The main sail must remain dark but modeled

Purples, browns and some light edges indicate its volume. A uniform black would remove its curvature and separation from the clouds.

Color02

White is reserved for light impacts

They appear in the gaps in the sky, the horizon and the foam. Their distribution must remain discontinuous so as not to transform the moon into general lighting.

Matter03

The material of the waves changes with distance

The nearby touches are thick and contrasting, those in the distance become smaller and horizontal. This variation is enough to deepen the night sea.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted around 1864, this oil on canvas measures 60 × 73.8 cm. It is kept at the National Galleries of Scotland under the NG 2399 inventory and listed as Wildenstein 71.

Location01

The port of Honfleur under a night sky

The museum's notice identifies Honfleur, where Monet worked regularly in the 1860s. The lighthouse, sailboats and steamship transformed the Norman port into a modern navigation scene.

Technique02

A combination of brush and knife

The luminous areas appear to be deposited in thick material, particularly in clouds and on waves. This treatment reinforces the dramatic contrast without losing the mobility of the sea.

Rare subject03

One of the rare nights painted by Monet

The museum recalls that Monet admired the effects of moonlight but considered it difficult to study them directly in front of the motif. He will very rarely return to such complete darkness.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the sail in the foreground as the main mass.
  • Distinguish the cold light of the moon from the hot fire of the lighthouse.
  • Keep blues and purples in shadows.
  • Vary the thickness of reflections and foam.
