A unique pattern placed in a vast colorful field
The sailboat remains small compared to the canvas. This scale ratio gives breadth to the atmosphere and transforms an ordinary maritime scene into a study of light.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · navy at sunset · 1885 · W1027
A single sailboat with an almost black sail advances on a pale sea, under a yellow, pink and gray sky which occupies more than half of the composition. Its narrow hull and purple reflection form the densest point of a surface worked by large visible gestures. Dated 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 54 × 65 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under number 5171 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1027.

Look at the work
The boat is placed slightly to the right of the center and seems isolated between sky and water. Monet describes neither port nor coast precisely: a few purple and pink bands are enough to suggest a distant shore, leaving the change of light the main role.
The sky changes from bright yellow near the horizon to colder pinkish grays in the upper part. On the water, the same hues are reduced by horizontal lines, while the reflection of the sailboat descends in more vertical touches of violet and green.
The sail acts like a black punctuation: without it, sky and sea would blend in; thanks to it, the lightest nuances immediately become perceptible.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The sailboat remains small compared to the canvas. This scale ratio gives breadth to the atmosphere and transforms an ordinary maritime scene into a study of light.
The sail mixes deep blue, green, brown and purple rather than uniform black. These shades keep the material visible and connect the boat to the colors of its reflection.
The sky receives smears and wide curves; the sea is covered with flatter lines. Monet thus makes the difference between air and water felt with the sole direction of his brush.
Reference image
The single image comes directly from the Marmottan Monet museum notice. It is kept at 1,500 × 1,260 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
Enlarging the hull or sail would reduce the evening space surrounding it. The boat must remain a dense accent in the middle of a vast light.
The palette is not a saturated orange sunset. Its colors are veiled, subtle and mixed with gray, which constitutes the identity of W1027.
The brush marks remain legible even in the cream passages. Too smooth reproduction would remove the vibration that animates the calm sea.
Documented benchmarks
The Marmottan Monet museum preserves Le Voilier, evening effect, oil on canvas from 1885, 54 × 65 cm, inventory 5171 and Wildenstein catalog 1027.
The museum notice specifies the presence of the Claude Monet stamp. This detail distinguishes the version kept in Paris and is part of its documented material condition.
The painting joined the Marmottan Monet museum in 1966 through the legacy of Michel Monet, like several works that the artist had preserved in his studio.
That year, Monet multiplied the views of the sea, cliffs and boats. Here, he eliminates almost any topographical landmark to focus the eye on the evening effect.

Presentation in your interior
This horizontal navy is suitable for a bedroom, living room or reading space. A gray pink, natural linen or very pale green wall and a matte black frame make the sail stand out without hardening the palette.
