Claude Monet · Sailboats, promenade and café of the Argenteuil basin · RISD Museum

The Argenteuil Basin W325hand painted reproduction

From an island in the Seine, Monet looks out over the Argenteuil basin and its tree-lined promenade. Three white sails cross the blue water, while in the foreground a moored boat, orange masts and dense bushes give scale. The terrace café on the opposite bank appears between the trees as a discreet sign of modern leisure.

Look at the work

The sails and their reflections enliven the pool viewed from an island

The foreground is shared between a grass-covered shoreline on the right and a small light boat on the left. Three orange masts stand in front of the water, without a sail, and echo the trunks of the promenade. This framing places the viewer as close as possible to the shore.

Three white sailboats are distributed at different distances over the basin. The opposite bank forms a strip of olive green trees; in the center, the terrace café can be recognized by its light pavilion. The cobalt blue water is covered with white, pink and green dashes which capture movement and reflections.

The subject combines regatta, promenade and café, but Monet mainly makes it a study of rhythms: vertical masts, triangular sails and horizontal touches of water.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An established viewpoint on the island

The RISD Museum specifies that Monet places his easel on an island opposite the promenade. The nearby bushes and boat therefore frame the view, while the café and trees belong to the opposite bank.

02

Three families of pictorial brands

Thick, tight touches describe the grasses in the foreground, horizontal dashes make the water, and small light and dark marks make up the line of plane trees. Each area thus has its own rhythm.

03

The sails open the depth

The nearest sail is large and slightly off-center; the other two decrease to the right and towards the bottom. Their colored whites contrast with the shore without breaking the luminous unity of the landscape.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to the Argenteuil Basin, inventory 42.219 of the RISD Museum and Wildenstein number 325. The image of 2,536 × 1,917 px is preserved at its native definition in a real WebP file.

Composition01

The orange masts structure the foreground

Their verticality and reflections provide a warm contrast in the middle of the blues. They should remain thin and slightly irregular, not transformed into uniform graphic lines.

Color02

The coffee remains partially hidden

The light pavilion is visible between the trees, but the terrace and the promenade are reduced to small touches. This discretion maintains the distance and avoids competing with sailboats.

Matter03

Bushes combine matter and light

In the foreground, greens, yellows, ochres and browns are placed in tight marks. Their density must contrast with the more fluid water without becoming an opaque mass.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 55.2 × 74.3 cm. It is kept at the RISD Museum under inventory 42.219 and listed as Wildenstein 325.

Location01

The Argenteuil regatta basin

The long promenade and the terrace café made the pool a popular place to watch regattas. Easily accessible from Paris, Argenteuil brought together water sports, sociability and transformations of the modern suburbs.

Painting02

Pigments used with frankness

The museum points out that Monet uses pigments taken out of the tube and then mixed on his palette. Grasses, water and trees receive different gestures, which allows him to distinguish textures and optical effects without smoothing the surface.

Provenance03

A donation to the RISD Museum in 1942

Count Jean de Rasty purchased the painting directly from Monet in 1877, perhaps under the title Esquisse, Argenteuil. After several dealers and collectors, Mrs. Murray S. Danforth donated it to the RISD Museum in 1942.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the precise layering of the three sails.
  • Maintain the orange masts and their fine reflections.
  • Differentiate between dense bushes, horizontal water and rows of plane trees.
  • Keep the coffee visible but integrated into the distant shore.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This nautical scene is suitable for a living room, dining room or office. A honey oak, deep blue or off-white frame accompanies the sails; a light beige, blue gray or olive green wall reveals the intensity of the water.
