In this rare vertical format, the Seine becomes a long surface of light which leads the eye to the slopes of Vétheuil. A large tree occupies the right bank, an island of dark foliage advances to the left and their reflections divide the water into silver, blue and green passages.

Light descends from the sky to the foreground

The sky occupies the upper third and is built by large rounded touches, gray blue, cream and pale pink. Under this moving vault, the hills and a few silhouettes of trees close a low horizon, letting the Seine develop over the entire height.

On the right, the mass of a tree plunges into an almost black reflection; on the left, an island of vegetation creates a second screen. Between the two opens a clear trail which descends towards the viewer, animated by blue and orange touches until near the signature.

The vertical format transforms the river in depth: the sky, the trees and their reflections no longer form separate registers, but a single movement from top to bottom.

A landscape thought vertically

The canvas directly connects the sky to its reflection. The clear channel acts as a central axis while the plant masses occupy the sides, like slides.

Two brush writings

The clouds are shaped by short, curved touches; the water receives more elongated and more directional passages. This difference is enough to distinguish the surfaces despite a common palette.

A very stable asymmetry

The large tree on the right dominates, but the dark islet on the left and the slope of the hillside balance its weight. The central light area keeps the whole thing breathing.

Deposit in Rouen since 1954

Attributed to the custody of the Louvre Museum in 1950, the work was deposited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen where it is kept under number D.1954.6.1.

National Recovery Museums, MNR 205

Found in Germany after World War II, the painting is being kept by the state pending identification of a possible rightful owner.
