Look at the work

A boat connects the river to the village

The Seine fills the entire lower half, worked by short horizontal touches of cream, gray, blue and green. The dark boat is located slightly to the left of the center; its two occupants and their reflection are enough to give scale to the river.

On the other bank, the houses line up in white and gray masses around the church. A large narrow poplar tree responds to the bell tower, while the hill rises gently to the right. The sky, crossed by lilac bands, remains light and lets the village dominate the horizon.

The little boat does not tell an isolated anecdote: it measures the width of the Seine and makes perceptible the distance which separates the spectator from Vétheuil.

Narcisse Coqueret

The notice indicates that Coqueret owned the work in 1880, undoubtedly acquired directly from Monet in Vétheuil in June.

Course02

From Boston to Durand-Ruel

The painting went to the Brooks collections in the United States, then to Durand-Ruel in 1912 before belonging to Doctor and Mrs. Albert Charpentier.

Collection03

Don Albert Charpentier, 1937

Entered the national collections by donation, this oil on canvas measuring 43.5 × 70.5 cm is today kept at the Musée d'Orsay.
