The Seine at Vétheuil W673hand painted reproduction

The Seine describes a wide curve at the foot of a tree-covered hillside. A row of slender poplars follows the bank, while their silhouettes and slope are reflected in almost still water. Look at the work

The river becomes a mirror between the poplars and the hillside

The bank draws an arc from the lower left edge towards the center right. Thin poplars are divided into unequal groups, dominated by a darker mass. The colored hillside closes the composition without erasing the depth.

Deep green, purple, yellow and pink structure the trees and the slope. The sky takes on cream and pearl gray tones. In the water, these colors are stretched vertically then interrupted by small horizontal touches.

The reflection does not faithfully repeat the shore: it breaks it down into colored columns and transforms the real landscape into pictorial rhythm.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A curve that opens space

The nearby bank avoids a straight separation between land and water. Its arc leads towards the poplars then towards the slope of the distance.

02

Natural verticals

The fine trunks interrupt the large horizontal areas of the sky and the river. Their diversity of height gives the landscape a supple rhythm.

03

A freer reflection than his model

The shapes of the shoreline extend into the water, but the colors mix and fragment. This autonomy of reflection animates the entire lower half.

Composition01

Preserve the great curve of the Seine

It must remain readable from the foreground to the group of trees in the center.

Color02

Preserve fine and irregular poplars

Their silhouettes should not become a uniform row or lose their height differences.

Matter03

Keep the green-purple highlights

Colored columns should blend into the water without mechanically reproducing each tree.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The documentation from La Seine à Vétheuil identifies an oil on canvas from 1881, 73.7 × 100.5 cm, signed and dated, belonging to a private collection and listed as Wildenstein 673.

Vétheuil01

A landscape painted at the end of Monet's stay

Between 1878 and 1881, Monet explored the shores, islands, fields and hillsides around the village. W673 belongs to this continuous observation of the Seine.

Scale02

A format over a meter wide

The dimensions of 73.7 × 100.5 cm allow the trees and reflections to unfold with an unusual magnitude for this pattern.

Course03

A work released on the market in 2006

The painting was sold at Christie's in London before being presented on loan at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona.
