The Seine at Vétheuil W529hand painted reproduction

The Seine occupies the entire foreground, dotted with blues, whites and yellows which transform the current into a sparkling surface. A dark mass of trees enters from the left; on the opposite bank, poplars, hillsides and houses unfold under a clear sky. A small boat in the center brings the only human accent. This oil on canvas measuring 54 × 73 cm, painted in 1879 and kept in a private collection, corresponds to Wildenstein 529.

Look at the work

A bright light opens the Seine in front of Vétheuil, between the shadow of the foreground and the colorful hillsides of the opposite bank

The tree on the left edge functions as a very dark screen, cut by the framing. It casts a blue shadow on the water and makes the land on the other bank appear brighter. In the center, a small boat stands out with a few touches of red, black and white.

The distant shore alternates vertical poplars, areas of foliage and clear slope. The houses are not described separately; their walls and roofs mingle with the pinks, greens and yellows of the hillside. The blue and white sky responds to the river, but the water receives a tighter pattern of small horizontal touches.

An ancient description of La Seine à Vétheuil emphasizes a river "glittery with bluish reflections". This formula corresponds to the structure of W529: the foreground is not a continuous mirror, but a luminous mosaic animated by the breeze.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The shadow on the left gives its shine to the rest of the landscape

The almost black foliage is not just a foil. Its deep blues and condensed greens measure the light of the river and prevent light colors from becoming uniform.

02

The small boat sets the scale of the Seine

Placed near the center without taking up much space, it allows you to assess the width of the river. Its few warm accents attract the eye then send it back towards the banks.

03

The water keys follow a horizontal logic

Blues, yellows and whites are juxtaposed in short strips, different from the more vertical gestures of poplars. This opposition is enough to separate the reflection, the shore and the sky.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single image represents exactly Wildenstein 529. The reference file measures 984 × 726 px after removal of documentary margins; it remains at its native definition, without artificial enlargement, then is encoded in real WebP.

Composition01

Keep left edge dark screen

It should stay deep without turning flat black. Blues and greens visible in the shadows maintain the colorful relationship with the Seine.

Color02

Preserve the boat on its small scale

The human scene remains an accent, not a narrative subject. Too large or too precise, it would cancel out the scale of the river and the distance from the hillside.

Matter03

Keep the yellow and blue vibration of the foreground

Light keys should not merge gray. Their juxtaposition produces the brilliance of the water and clearly distinguishes W529 from the covered atmosphere of W530.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The catalog raisonné documents La Seine à Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1879, 54 × 73 cm, private collection and reference Wildenstein 529.

Identification01

The Wildenstein 529 version, not the Geneva canvas

W529 measures 54 × 73 cm and features a very bright Seine, a large dark tree on the left and a central boat. W530 measures 46.3 × 61.5 cm and has a much grayer atmosphere.

Location02

The daily landscape of Monet during the years of Vétheuil

Installed in the village in 1878, Monet worked from the banks and his boat-workshop. The river allows it to bring together a stable pattern and ever-changing lighting effects.

Status03

A work kept in a private collection

No current museum or public inventory number should be arbitrarily associated with this version. The solid reference remains number 529 of the Wildenstein catalog and the published format of 54 × 73 cm.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 529 version, separate from W530
  • The large blue-green foliage cut by the left edge
  • The small boat placed in the center of the Seine
  • The yellow, white and blue reflections of the foreground

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal river landscape is suitable for a living room, dining room or office. A pale blue, olive or cream green wall and a light oak frame extend the light of the Seine without reducing the contrast of the foliage.
