Lavacourt suspended between the sky and its reflection

From the bank of Vétheuil, Monet looks towards Lavacourt. The houses, trees and roofs form a narrow frieze placed high in the image. The foreground is therefore not a simple empty space: it is occupied by the Seine, whose horizontal touches slow down the gaze before leading it towards the village.

A low, vegetal island advances in the water in the center of the composition. Its dark silhouette serves as a pivot between the distant shore and the large areas of reflection. The pale yellows of the sky repeat in the river, mixed with lilacs, broken blues and greens; the shapes of the village dissolve without disappearing.

Monet gives water the main role: Lavacourt is no longer just a place, but a succession of colors taken up, stretched and transformed by the Seine.
