The Seine at Giverny - RISD W1007 versionhand painted reproduction

A wooded island occupies the right bank and extends into the water with long green, purple and blue reflections. On the left, a darker bank frames a light passage towards the distance; above, the pink and blue sky extends widely. Look at the work

A luminous gap separates the banks and leads the Seine towards the horizon

The right part brings together the densest foliage. Their mass, animated by mauves and blues, descends almost to the middle of the canvas; the lower bank and the reflections nevertheless prevent this vegetation from becoming a closed block.

The left channel remains clear and almost empty. The clouds descend there in the form of diffuse roses and whites, while the wooded tip of the center pushes the river back towards a very pale blue zone.

The painting contrasts two speeds of gaze: the slow richness of the foliage and reflections on the right, then the immediate escape of light on the left.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Shores that act like backstage

The foliage near the left and the large island on the right bring the foreground closer together. Between them, the passage of water appears deeper and brighter.

02

A reflection that transforms trees

In water, round masses of foliage become vertical, fragmented lines. This difference in gesture shows the current without adding descriptive waves.

03

A vast sky connected to the river

Gray, pink and white blues circulate from the top towards the channel. Monet thus avoids a clear separation between the earth's landscape and the atmosphere.

Read this specific version

The RISD Museum's only open image is extracted from its IIIF service at 3,000 × 2,115 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the clear channel on the left side

It must remain wide enough to open the composition. An invasive or too dark bank would remove the main effect of depth.

Color02

Keep the green-purple mixture of the large foliage

Trees are not uniformly green. Purples and blues reflect shadow, air and reflected light.

Matter03

Distinguish the bank from its reflection

The direction of the key must change at water level. A symmetrical repetition would make the river still and artificial.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The RISD Museum preserves La Seine à Giverny, oil on canvas signed and dated 1885, 64.8 × 92.7 cm, inventory 44,541 and Wildenstein 1007.

Topography01

Near the confluence of the Seine and the Epte

The museum places the motif among the wooded islands near Giverny, at the point where the two rivers meet.

Provenance02

Durand-Ruel bought the painting from Monet in December 1885

This contemporary acquisition of the execution sets the identity of the work early; the RISD Museum then purchased it in Wildenstein in 1944.

Access03

A collector's image distributed under CC0

The RISD Museum provides zoomable scanning of this precise version, useful for controlling the key, colors and dimensions.
