On the Seine, a large dark sailboat runs along the left bank while other ships stretch into the distance. The masts cross a cloudy sky painted in gray, blue, cream and mauve; in the center, the vertical silhouettes of the port buildings blend into the atmosphere. Monet makes the river and industrial traffic of Rouen a luminous, ample and solidly constructed composition.

A succession of boats leads the view from the wooded bank towards the industrial heart of Rouen

The ship in the foreground, seen from three quarters, occupies the left with its black hull and its two large masts. A small boat and a few figures accompany it. Further on, several sailboats are spread out across the river, each gradually reduced to a combination of hulls and vertical lines.

The left bank forms a mass of brown and green foliage. In the center, chimneys, bell towers or port facilities emerge in the mist, then a hill closes the right. The little blue, gray and cream touches of the water take back the light from the sky without erasing the current.

The modern port is neither idealized nor cluttered with details: Monet organizes it by successive distances, until he makes the very measurements of depth from the masts.

Rouen is not described facade by facade. The buildings in the center become blue-gray silhouettes, caught between the smoke, the clouds and the humidity of the river; their imprecision immediately places them far away.

In 1874, Monet painted commercial navigation, quays and signs of industry without opposition between nature and modernity. Water, vegetation, ships and chimneys contribute to the same effect of light.
