A dirt road follows the bank of the Seine between a farm, a few trees and gray water. In the distance, a barge goes up the river and two tiny figures advance on the path. Above this almost motionless landscape, a vast sky of blue, white and gray clouds becomes the main event of the scene.

Look at the work

The road, the river and the clouds respond in long bands

The path starts from the lower left corner and curves towards the center. The farm and a yellow tree mark the first third; further on, two small silhouettes and a few buildings give the scale of the bank.

The Seine remains smooth, only interrupted by a dark barge. The sky occupies more than half of the picture. Its stacked clouds alternate cold gray, cream white and blue openings.

The calm of the river is barely disturbed by the barge; the movement belongs mainly to the clouds which cross the estuary.

Clouds are constructed by superimposed masses rather than contours. Blue openings prevent the whole thing from appearing heavy.

The George Pierce Metcalf legacy

Mr and Mrs George P. Metcalf purchased the work in 1945. It entered the museum in 1957 with the bequest of George Pierce Metcalf.
