Artwork description
Claude Monet · Port-Villez · around 1890 · W1264
A gust bends the trees of an islet in the Seine and lifts their foliage in a succession of greens, blues and yellows. Painted around 1890, this panoramic oil on canvas measuring 60.3 × 99.7 cm is kept at the Columbus Museum of Art under number 1991.001.043 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1264.

Look at the work
A strip of low earth crosses the canvas and separates the water from the sky. The trees lean in the same direction, but their trunks and crowns react differently: some bend, others still stand up, creating a plant wave.
The Seine occupies a seemingly calm foreground, animated by touches of blue, mauve and green. Above the islet, the clear sky contrasts its width with the compact movement of the foliage. The elongated format accentuates the lateral trajectory of the gust.
W1264 does not only represent a place on the Seine: the curve of the trunks and the agitation of the keys make visible a force that cannot be painted directly.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Trees form a rhythmic sequence rather than a continuous mass. Their inclination leads to the gaze over the entire width of the format.
The earth remains very low and almost horizontal. This stability makes the agitation of the foliage, which stands out against the sky, more perceptible.
The horizontal touches of the water, the oblique gestures of the branches and the softer friction of the sky give each element its own speed.
Reference image
The sheet uses a single exact image of W1264, converted to a true WebP of 2989 × 1772 px at its source resolution, without artificial enlargement.
Trunks should not be straightened. Their irregular curvature transmits the pressure of the gust and distinguishes this canvas from the calmer views of Port-Villez.
Shadows mix blue, green and purple. Replacing them with brown or black would make the trees heavy and cut off their relationship with the Seine.
The movement of the foreground is more contained than that of the islet. This opposition between stretched surface and agitated vegetation is essential to the composition.
Documented benchmarks
The Columbus Museum of Art preserves this view of Port Villez, oil on canvas of 60.3 × 99.7 cm, inventory 1991.001.043 and catalog Wildenstein 1264.
The title emphasizes the atmospheric event. Port-Villez locates the motif, but the behavior of the trees reveals the main subject of the painting.
The 99.7 cm width gives the group of trees the space to unfold like a frieze. The reduced height keeps the island in the center of a vast environment.
This issue of the Columbus Museum of Art, associated with the reference W1264, precisely distinguishes the work from other landscapes of the Seine painted around Port-Villez.
