The Seine stretches under a mist that almost erases the boundary between the water, the bank and the sky. On the left, a mass of blue-green trees is reflected in the river; in the distance, blue hills and a few salmon banks appear in strata. Monet does not describe a spectacular moment: he makes you feel the slow fusion of the landscape in the humidity.

A Seine shrouded in mist, where the planes slide over each other until the contours are abolished

The panoramic format stretches three main bands: clear water in the foreground, the wooded bank and the hills in the distance, then a very pale sky. No line completely closes these areas. The vertical reflections of the trees cross the surface and connect the bank to the river.

The Rouen museum describes a general almond green tone, animated by blue, ocher, yellow and salmon. The colored strata overlap in width and give the impression that the eye simultaneously perceives water, vegetation and atmosphere.

In W1370, the mist is not a veil placed over the landscape: it is the very material that unites the banks, the reflections and the sky.

Port-Villez, a motif close to Giverny

Monet worked in Port-Villez on the Seine before continuing further downstream towards Vernon. The site allows him to observe long banks, calm water and mist effects where topographical details become secondary.

Wide strata rather than contours

The Mona Lisa national notice insists on the superposition of colored layers which slide over each other. For faithful reproduction, transitions must remain flexible: an overly drawn edge would destroy the atmospheric unit.

A stop towards the great Water Lilies

The Rouen museum brings this fusion closer to the elements of Monet's subsequent research on the Giverny basin. Water is already becoming an autonomous surface where the sky, trees and reflections can coexist.

Warm shades are rare but decisive. A few ocher and salmon passages prevent the blues and greens from evenly cooling the scene.

Vertical reflections in a horizontal surface

The brush stretches the water from left to right, then the reflections descend into more vertical accents. This alternation gives the river its silent movement.

This oil on canvas from 1894 measures 65 × 100 cm. It bears the signature and date "Claude Monet 94" at the bottom left.

Acquisition02

Entered the museum in 1909

The work belonged first to Monet, then to the Rouen industrialist and collector François Depeaux. It entered the municipal collections of Rouen in 1909.

Exposure03

Presented by Durand-Ruel in 1895

The painting appeared in the Monet exhibition at the Durand-Ruel gallery in Paris in 1895 under number 43, shortly after its execution.
