The Seine at Port-Villez, evening effect W1379hand painted reproduction

The Seine stretches at the foot of a long blue hill, while a clump of trees closes the right bank. The evening does not translate into uniform darkness: cold roses, mauves, blues and a few greens overlap in the water and the sky. Monet reduces the details to make the slow change in light noticeable.

Look at the work

An evening effect where the Seine, the hill and the sky merge in the same blue-pink vibration

The exceptionally elongated format places the horizon almost in the middle. The hill descends from right to left and leads the gaze into the distance. The dark group of trees acts as a compact counterweight, while the large surface of the river remains open and reflective.

Purples and blues are never laid flat. They encounter pink, turquoise and pearl gray passages which circulate the light. In the water, the horizontal touches extend gently; on the bank, they become tighter and build the volume of the trees.

W1379 transforms the evening into a color ratio: the light fades, but each shot remains animated by nuances that prevent the landscape from closing.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A very broad canvas within the 1894 campaign

At only 52.4 cm high and 92.6 cm wide, this version accentuates the stretching of the river. Monet eliminates any narrative foreground and focuses attention on the relationship between water, the slope of Port-Villez and the sky.

02

The clump of trees organizes all the depth

The plant mass on the right is the darkest passage. Its reflection descends into the river, but remains interrupted by light touches. This shape gives scale to the distance and prevents the colored bands from appearing purely decorative.

03

An evening built without black

The deepest areas combine blue, green and purple. Sky roses return to the water and maintain internal brightness. Reproduction should preserve these mixtures instead of converting the shore into a black silhouette.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 1600 × 905 px. It remains at its native definition in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A hill diagonal facing a vertical tree

The slope descends slowly to the left, while the group of trees rises to the right. This opposition directs the gaze into depth and stabilizes the panorama.

Color02

Misty blue, cool pink and muffled green

The colors remain close in value. Their distinction is based on temperature: pink warms the surface, blue keeps the hill away and green densifies the shore.

Matter03

Thin layers layered in water

Reflections are achieved by overlapping elongated touches. A faithful copy must maintain this apparent transparency and avoid a smooth mirror or overly drawn waves.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This information concerns exactly the painting from the Marmottan Monet museum, inventory 5025 and Wildenstein catalog 1379.

Identification01

Marmottan 5025, W1379

This oil on canvas from 1894 measures 52.4 × 92.6 cm. Its very large format distinguishes it from nearby views of Port-Villez, often painted on taller frames.

Collection02

The legacy of Michel Monet

The work entered the Marmottan Monet museum with the bequest of Michel Monet in 1966, an essential ensemble which preserves numerous paintings remaining in the artist's family.

Series03

Port-Villez observed under several effects

In 1894, Monet recaptured the Seine near Giverny under neighboring lights. W1379 focuses on the evening effect, while other versions modify the mist, the dominant pink or the sharpness of the banks.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Marmottan Monet Museum version 5025 and Wildenstein 1379
  • The original panoramic ratio of 52.4 × 92.6 cm
  • The mass of trees preserved blue and green, never black
  • The pink and purple reflections extended horizontally in the Seine
