The Seine opens like a blue-pink mirror between two masses of foliage. On the right, an island and its trees are reflected almost vertically in the water; on the left, a dark bank frames a luminous passage which leads towards the horizon. Signed and dated 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 64.8 × 92.7 cm is kept at the RISD Museum under number 44.541 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1007.

The river becomes a space of reflections where the bank and its image respond to each other

The viewpoint is located near the confluence of the Seine and the Epte, probably from a boat or a low bank. The lateral banks partially close the field, but the central gap and the clear sky maintain a continuous depth towards the distance.

Monet does not copy trees twice. Actual foliage is constructed by denser, more directional touches; in their reflection, the same colors are broken into vertical, wavy lines that record the river current.

Water is not a simple mirror: it transforms the diagonal of clouds and the volumes of trees into scattered marks, making visible the difference between a shape and its moving reflection.

A natural framing formed by the banks

The dark foliage on both sides acts as a backstage. They bring the foreground closer together and make the strip of water that moves away towards the center appear brighter.

A bluish pink light that runs through the entire canvas

The sky, river and some areas of foliage share pale pinks, blue grays and purples. This circulation colors the atmosphere without removing the distinction between air, earth and water.

Reflections oriented according to the current

The trees on the right find vertical and fragmented extensions in the water. The clouds become more horizontal and dispersed touches, which enliven the surface without making it agitated.

These nuances connect sky and river. A correction that is too green or too blue would cause the subtle atmosphere documented by the museum to be lost.

The museum places the view where the Epte joins the Seine, among small wooded islands that Monet could observe from a boat or a nearby bank.

Purchased in Monet by Durand-Ruel in December 1885

This acquisition, very close to completion, confirms the identification and dating; the RISD Museum then purchased the painting from Wildenstein in 1944.
