The main mast as axis
The vertical of the sailboat responds to the trees on the right and distant chimneys. It organizes a very open scene without transforming the boat into an isolated silhouette.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Rouen · Shizuoka Prefectural Art Museum
A large moored sailboat structures the port of Rouen, while the houses, chimneys and spire of the cathedral dissolve in clear light. The painting combines modern activity and atmosphere without sacrificing the presence of the river.

Look at the work
In the center, the dark hull of a sailboat and its high mast give the composition its main vertical. A lighter boat and other masts extend the movement towards the opposite bank. The water remains calm, but the broken reflections prevent any immobility: the boat, the stakes and the chimneys are taken up by stretched touches.
The museum notice indicates that a cargo is unloaded from the sailboat. Behind this port scene, the houses form a low strip, the spire of the cathedral emerges between the roofs and Sainte-Catherine hill closes the horizon on the right. Monet thus holds together the activity of the port, the landmarks of the city and the luminous expanse of the Seine.
The ship provides the framework, but it is the circulation of blues, pinks and grays between the sky and the water that gives the port its breath.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The vertical of the sailboat responds to the trees on the right and distant chimneys. It organizes a very open scene without transforming the boat into an isolated silhouette.
Houses, cathedral and port facilities are readable without strong contours. Warm grays, pinks and blues should blend into the atmosphere while keeping some sharp accents.
The museum highlights a fairly thin painting and visible reserves. These breaths of the preparation give freshness to the sky and the Seine; covering them evenly would weigh down the whole thing.
Reference image
The reference image published by the Shizuoka Museum recreates the complete framing and delicate tones of this W218 version, including the roses of the sky, the blues of the water and the dark mass of the sailboat.
The hull and the central mast serve as a pivot between the two banks and the various activities of the port.
The sky and the city mix blue, pink, ivory and mauve; no gray is neutral or uniform.
The touch sometimes lets the canvas breathe and varies between horizontal reflections, diffuse fumes and vertical accents.
Documented benchmarks
The Shizuoka Museum notice documents the port scene, the topographical landmarks and the particularly free technique of this 1872 painting.
Rouen is then a major port between Le Havre and Paris. Monet observes the transfer of goods without transforming the scene into an anecdotal story.
The spire of the cathedral appears behind the ship; on the right, Sainte-Catherine hill precisely locates the Rouen panorama.
Acquired by the museum in 1984, this oil on canvas measures 49.2 × 76.2 cm and corresponds to Wildenstein number 218.

Presentation in your interior
Its pale blues, gray pinks and bluish blacks bring a calm and architectural presence to a living room or office. A walnut, smoky gray or patinated silver frame accompanies the port character while letting the sky breathe.
