Claude Monet · Ships on the Seine in the port of Rouen · Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe

The Seine in Rouen W268hand painted reproduction

On the Seine, a large dark sailboat runs along the left bank while other ships stretch into the distance. The masts cross a cloudy sky painted in gray, blue, cream and mauve; in the center, the vertical silhouettes of the port buildings blend into the atmosphere. Monet makes the river and industrial traffic of Rouen a luminous, ample and solidly constructed composition.

Look at the work

A succession of boats leads the view from the wooded bank towards the industrial heart of Rouen

The ship in the foreground, seen from three quarters, occupies the left with its black hull and its two large masts. A small boat and a few figures accompany it. Further on, several sailboats are spread out across the river, each gradually reduced to a combination of hulls and vertical lines.

The left bank forms a mass of brown and green foliage. In the center, chimneys, bell towers or port facilities emerge in the mist, then a hill closes the right. The little blue, gray and cream touches of the water take back the light from the sky without erasing the current.

The modern port is neither idealized nor cluttered with details: Monet organizes it by successive distances, until he makes the very measurements of depth from the masts.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A depth constructed by repetition

From the large building on the left to the sailboats in the distance, the hulls and masts diminish in stages. This series of related shapes creates a more active perspective than a simple line of flight.

02

City appears through atmosphere

Rouen is not described facade by facade. The buildings in the center become blue-gray silhouettes, caught between the smoke, the clouds and the humidity of the river; their imprecision immediately places them far away.

03

The river landscape as a modern subject

In 1874, Monet painted commercial navigation, quays and signs of industry without opposition between nature and modernity. Water, vegetation, ships and chimneys contribute to the same effect of light.

Read this specific version

The visual comes from the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe and corresponds to La Seine à Rouen, inventory 2502 and Wildenstein number 268. The official reproduction was reduced to 1,000 × 764 px then encoded as a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The large left ship is dark but detailed in color

Blues, browns and ochres shape the hull and rigging. It must remain the main weight of the composition without becoming a uniform black silhouette.

Color02

Distant masts gradually lose their contrast

Their finesse and lighter color integrate them into the sky. Reinforcing them all in the same way would flatten the different distances from the port.

Matter03

The sky alternates cold and clear areas

Clear passages are found in the water in the form of small touches. This circulation of colors unites the top and bottom of the canvas despite the density of the boats.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 50.5 × 65.5 cm. It is kept at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe under inventory 2502 and listed as Wildenstein 268.

Location01

The port of Rouen on the Seine

Rouen is then a large inland port connected to the English Channel. Commercial sailboats, small boats and industrial installations offer Monet a motif where the depth of the river meets modern activity.

Date02

1874, founding year of Impressionism

The canvas is painted the year of the first exhibition organized by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissarro and their companions. Its free execution, however, is based on a carefully hierarchical composition.

Collection03

Inventory 2502 of the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe

The official notice of the Kunsthalle gives the date of 1874, the oil technique on canvas and the exact dimensions of 50.5 × 65.5 cm. The work is currently presented in the Kunsthalle route at the ZKM.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Keep the large ship slightly cut to the left.
  • Respect the gradual reduction of the masts.
  • Keeping urban silhouettes in the mist.
  • Circulate the blue grays and creams between sky and river.
