The port blends into the trees and the reflections

On the left, several boats overlap near the bank. Their thin masts stand in front of a darker mass of greenery; the hulls, barely separated from their reflection, are indicated by brown, blue and cream accents rather than by closed contours.

The right bank advances towards the foreground under a large curtain of trees. Two small boats cross the water at the bottom of the composition. Between them and the sailboats, the Seine opens a luminous area where the horizontal touches extend the colors of the sky and the banks.

The picture is held together by a subtle contrast: the verticals of the masts and trees stabilize a surface of water that the color keeps in motion.

Their finesse punctuates the left half without isolating each boat. They visually connect the hulls to the foliage and give height to a landscape largely dominated by water.

Dark vegetation cuts the edge of the painting and brings the viewer closer to the stage. This dense mass makes the central channel appear deeper and brighter.

Reflections constructed by repetitions

Pale yellow, purple, blue gray and brown return under boats and trees. Monet retains color matches while breaking up shapes with small horizontal touches.
