A tiny boat crosses the vast surface of the Seine almost alone. The wooded bank forms a dark line under the sky, while blue, green and gray bands give the water all its depth.

An isolated boat in the middle of the river
Van Gogh places the horizon very high. Most of the canvas thus becomes a study of water, crossed by oblique and horizontal touches which change with reflections.
The rower, reduced to a few light marks in the center right, serves as a ladder marker. On the opposite bank, the trees make up a dark frieze interrupted by pink embankments.
Painted in the spring of 1887, this 55 × 65 cm oil on canvas is F298/JH1257. It is kept at the Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum of Arts in Kyiv.
