À propos de l’œuvre

Autoportrait, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · End of August 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Self-portrait of Oslo, F528Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

On a dull green background, Van Gogh paints his face thin, his beard red and his gaze sliding sideways. The deliberately thin and uneven surface reveals a fragile image, very far from the firmness of the large blue self-portrait produced shortly after.

Look at the work

A fragile self-portrait left almost open

The bust is placed near the lower edge, in a brown-green jacket barely separated from the bottom. The pale face is framed by orange hair and beard; the eyes, turned to the side, avoid direct confrontation.

Some areas remain thin and matte, especially in the garment and around the shoulder. Elsewhere, small touches of green, pink and ocher are superimposed on the face without erasing the feeling of incompleteness.

The apparent weakness of the material is expressive here: it makes visible a moment of convalescence, when the painter begins to work again without trying to mask his vulnerability.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Nasjonalmuseet keeps this Self-portrait under the inventory NG.M.00943. The canvas measures 51.5 × 45 cm and bears the references F528/JH1780.

01

The gaze slips away

Unlike many frontal self-portraits, the eyes are directed sideways. This shift transforms the pose into a worried observation rather than a declaration of assurance.

02

A deliberately incomplete subject

The bottom and the jacket do not receive the same density of paint everywhere. The weft of the support and the thin layers contribute to the impression of fatigue.

03

Deliberately muffled colors

Muddy green, brown and gray dominate; the red of the beard remains the only warm focus. This narrow palette clearly distinguishes F528 from more dazzling self-portraits.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Self-portrait F528/JH1780 was painted in Saint-Rémy at the end of August 1889. It has belonged to the Nasjonalmuseet since 1910.

Authenticity

An award confirmed in 2020

Long discussed due to its unusual workmanship, the work was recognized as authentic after a technical, stylistic and documentary study carried out with the Van Gogh Museum.

Context

The first painting after a serious crisis

Researchers compare this image to a self-portrait that Van Gogh called an essay made when he was ill. He is said to have painted it when returning to work after his crisis in the summer of 1889.

Collection

Acquired by the Oslo Museum in 1910

The painting entered the Norwegian national collection very early on. Its provenance was notably linked to Joseph and Marie Ginoux, the painter's Arlesian friends.

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the thin material, the muted green, the side gaze, the pale cheeks, the red beard and the deliberately poorly covered passages of the garment.

  • Green eyes turned to the side
  • The little pink and yellow touches of the face
  • The orange beard on the green-brown jacket
  • Thin areas that preserve the unfinished appearance
