À propos de l’œuvre

Autoportrait, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · September 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Portrait of the artistReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh represents himself in a bust, dressed in a blue-gray jacket in front of a background covered with turquoise arabesques. The fixed gaze, the red beard and the swirling touches give this portrait an intensity without accessories or decoration.

Look at the work

A face motionless in a moving space

The painter appears three-quarters, his shoulders slightly turned while his face returns to the viewer. The garment blends into a range of cool blues. In the center, pale skin, orange hair and beard create the brightest contrast of the canvas.

Produced in Saint-Rémy in September 1889, the self-portrait does not seek a smooth description. Short touches follow the forehead, cheeks and folds of the jacket; behind the figure, soft lines animate the background. The material and the direction of the brush become as expressive as the look.

Van Gogh contrasts the concentration of the face with the continuous movement of the key, as if the entire space vibrates around him.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This version from the Musée d'Orsay can be recognized by its light jacket, its red beard and the blue-green background formed by large undulations.

01

A decentered look

The light green eyes are not perfectly symmetrical and seem to aim slightly beyond the viewer. This subtlety avoids the rigidity of a frontal portrait.

02

Orange versus turquoise

Beard, hair, and some facial shadows use oranges that vibrate against dominant blues and greens. The contrast focuses all the attention on the head.

03

A directional touch

The features follow the shape of the skull, collar and shoulders, then widen into waves at the bottom. Their rhythm builds both volume and atmosphere.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Musée d'Orsay preserves this painting under the title Portrait of the Artist and the date 1889.

Series

More than forty self-portraits

Van Gogh regularly uses his own face as a model. These paintings allow him to study color, physiognomy and the expressive possibilities of the touch.

Period

Saint-Rémy, September 1889

The work belongs to the stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, a period during which undulating lines and complementary relationships take a major place.

Collection

Inventory RF 1949 17

Paul and Marguerite Gachet, children of Doctor Gachet, gave the portrait to the French State in 1949. It is today exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must retain the resemblance, the orange-turquoise contrast and above all the meaning of each key, which follows the volumes then animates the background.

  • Exact eye position and concentrated expression
  • Variations of green, pink and ocher in the face
  • The red beard cut out on the blue-gray jacket
  • The undulations at the bottom, fluid but never decorative
