Look at the work

A self-portrait of a café where the pipe and the glass tell the story of everyday Paris

The bust is placed three-quarters and slightly off-center. The left hand appears at the lower edge, while the glass cuts the right angle: these two fragments bring the scene closer to the viewer.

The face is constructed by pinks, yellows, greens and some bluish shadows. The frontal gaze remains very precise, but the rest of the figure gradually dissolves in the dark hatching of the garment and the background.

Self-portrait with glass is an oil on canvas measuring 61.1 × 50.2 cm painted in Paris in January 1887. The work F263a/JH1199 is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0161V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum describes a man sitting with a full glass, perhaps in a Parisian café. The pipe, the drink and the proximity of the framing give the study a biographical dimension, but the canvas is mainly used to experiment with portrait and color.

01

The glass anchors the scene in a concrete place

Its transparent shape, truncated by the edge of the canvas, suggests a table very close to the painter. It thus avoids the effect of a bust placed in front of an abstract background.

02

The pipe extends the diagonal of the face

Its black pipe runs through the mouth and points outwards. This little graphic accent responds to the eyebrow, mustache and contours of the jacket.

03

The face concentrates the lightest touches

Roses and yellows first catch the eye, then greens and blues shape the cheeks and eyes. The head appears lit in the middle of a dense atmosphere.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F263a/JH1199, inventory s0161V1962 and the format of 61.1 × 50.2 cm distinguish this seated self-portrait from the many tighter portraits taken by Van Gogh in Paris.

Below

A female figure hides under the self-portrait

The museum's technical research revealed a half-naked woman under the visible painting. Van Gogh therefore reused an already worked canvas, a common economic practice for him.

Cafes

A drink can evoke his Parisian habits

The notice recalls that he regularly frequented cafes and that he would later discuss his alcohol consumption. However, the museum cautiously formulates the exact identity of the drink.

Signature

"Vincent 87" places the work in the Parisian year

The signature and date painted at the top left contribute to the red-brown background while providing a visible reference point for this study from January 1887.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the seated framing, the direct gaze, the black pipe, the glass cut by the lower edge, the dark jacket and the red-brown vibration of the background.

  • The frontal gaze surrounded by green and blue touches
  • The dark pipe held between the lips
  • Clear glass at the bottom right corner
  • The hand sketched in the foreground
  • The signature "Vincent 87" at the top left
