Look at the work

The painter still shows himself at work

The bust turns slightly to the left as the face returns towards us. In the lower corner, the hand holds a clear palette and a bundle of brushes. The blue blouse, closed at the neck, occupies almost the entire bottom of the format.

The background is covered with long blue touches that follow the contours of the head and shoulders like an aura. On the face, yellow, green and pink features tighten around the eyes and cheekbones. The orange hair and beard form the warm contrast of the composition.

Produced at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, F626 is one of Van Gogh's last self-portraits. The firm presence of the tools affirms that the painter's work remains at the center of his identity.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The National Gallery of Art preserves the work under number 1998.74.5 and gives precise dimensions of 57.79 × 44.5 cm for the canvas.

01

A sideways glance

The face is almost frontal, but the shoulders and eyes do not follow exactly the same axis. This slight shift makes the pose tense and lively.

02

A halo of keys

The background lines revolve around the silhouette. They isolate the head while connecting its movement to that of the blouse.

03

Tools in hand

The palette and brushes are not incidental: they show Van Gogh active, despite the fatigue visible in the thin face.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Washington Notice describes an intense self-portrait, painted during Van Gogh's convalescence and preserved in the John Hay Whitney Collection.

Series

One of the last

Van Gogh produced thirty-six self-portraits according to the National Gallery of Art; this one belongs to the small final group of Saint-Rémy.

Color

Orange versus blue

The beard and red hair accentuate the greenish paleness of the face and vibrate against the cobalt of the blouse and the background.

Collection

Don Whitney

Purchased by John Hay Whitney in 1947, the work entered the National Gallery of Art by donation in 1998.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the tight look, the long blue touches which hug the silhouette and the greens of the face without neutralizing them.

  • The oblique gaze under the tight eyebrows
  • Yellow-green skin shaped in small features
  • Red beard and short hair
  • The cobalt blue and purple blouse
  • The palette and brushes held in the lower corner
