A depth constructed in bands
Monet uses almost no vanishing lines. The distance arises from the overlap between water, the islet, the upper bank and the sky, as well as the gradual cooling of colors.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Port-Villez · around 1890 · W1263
A low islet crosses the Seine like a strip of foliage beaten by the wind, in front of the blue hills of Port-Villez. This oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 92.5 cm, painted around 1890, is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the number RF 2009 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1263.

Look at the work
The composition is organized into horizontal strata: the river in the foreground, the islet in the middle, the hills on the right and a vast cloudy sky. The end of the islet points to the left and gives direction to this seemingly calm landscape.
Unexpected pinks and reds roam the water, where they respond to the greens of the foliage. The purple hills cool the background, while the cream and peach clouds light up the scene without a visible light source.
W1263 transforms a simple islet into a colorful hinge: its foliage separates the planes while redistributing the blues, pinks and greens of the landscape in the Seine.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet uses almost no vanishing lines. The distance arises from the overlap between water, the islet, the upper bank and the sky, as well as the gradual cooling of colors.
The surface of the river receives horizontal blue, purple and coral lines. These colors take up the general atmosphere rather than an inverted and detailed silhouette of the islet.
The inventory title of the Musée d'Orsay, L'îlot (Seine in Port-Villez), specifies the motif: Monet observes here an intermediate plant form, neither main bank nor simple reflection.
Reference image
Only one image is used. The exact view of RF 2009 is provided in true WebP of 3000 × 2097 px, reduced from the source photograph and never artificially enlarged.
Vegetation should not become a massive hedge. Its irregular profile lets the sky and hills circulate above and around the pattern.
Coral and mauve highlights are essential to chromatic balance. Replacing them with realistic blue would greatly impoverish the W1263 version.
Horizontal gestures dominate in the water, become nervous in the foliage and more flexible in the clouds. Each area thus retains its own material.
Documented benchmarks
The Musée d'Orsay documents The Seine at Port-Villez, oil on canvas circa 1890, 65.5 × 92.5 cm, RF inventory 2009 and Wildenstein catalog 1263.
The merchant acquired the work directly from the artist on December 3, 1892. It passed the following year into the Parisian collection of Count Isaac de Camondo.
Isaac de Camondo bequeaths his collection to the State. The painting joined the Louvre, then the Jeu de Paume, before being assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
The official notice indicates the Claude Monet signature at the bottom left. The RF number 2009 and the reference W1263 precisely fix this version.
