The port of Rouen between commerce and light

In the center, the dark hull of a sailboat and its high mast give the composition its main vertical. A lighter boat and other masts extend the movement towards the opposite bank. The water remains calm, but the broken reflections prevent any immobility: the boat, the stakes and the chimneys are taken up by stretched touches.

The museum notice indicates that a cargo is unloaded from the sailboat. Behind this port scene, the houses form a low strip, the spire of the cathedral emerges between the roofs and Sainte-Catherine hill closes the horizon on the right. Monet thus holds together the activity of the port, the landmarks of the city and the luminous expanse of the Seine.

The ship provides the framework, but it is the circulation of blues, pinks and grays between the sky and the water that gives the port its breath.
