À propos de l’œuvre

La Seine près d'Argenteuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Reeds in front of the Argenteuil bank · Kunstmuseum Bern

The Seine near Argenteuil W327hand painted reproduction

From a bank invaded by reeds, Monet looks out over the Seine and the village of Argenteuil. The church and a few houses stand out very low on the horizon, accompanied by the smoke of a chimney. In the foreground, the long dark stems form a free network in front of almost white water and a sky where blues, creams and roses mingle.

Look at the work

Nearby reeds frame a distant shore almost dissolved in the air

The lower third is occupied by a dense tuft of blue-black stems which gradually opens to the right. Some leaves stand out against the water, others cross the horizon. Their angular design gives an energy in the foreground that the calm surface of the river absorbs.

In the distance, the church forms the main vertical landmark, surrounded by low houses. On the left, two chimneys and a trail of smoke introduce modern activity. The sky is more lively above the reeds, then becomes almost smooth and bright to the right.

Monet chooses a view without a boat or walker: reeds, smoke and clouds are enough to measure the distance and movement of the air.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately invasive foreground

The reeds occupy an unusual place and partially mask the river. Their proximity gives the viewer the impression of being seated at the water's edge rather than in front of a panorama composed from a distance.

02

A depth created by sharpness deviations

The stems are dark, contrasting and individualized; the opposite bank uses very pale mauves and greens. This difference in treatment is enough to widen the space despite the almost rectilinear horizon.

03

The coexistence of village and industry

The church, houses and chimneys appear on the same distant strip. Monet does not oppose them: smoke, bell towers and trees participate together in the modern atmosphere of Argenteuil.

Read this specific version

Composition01

Reeds do not form a uniform screen

Dry stems, blue leaves, light greens and water reserves overlap. Their varied directions must remain legible to maintain the depth of the foreground.

Color02

The village is built by very few signs

A bell tower, a few roofs and colorful strips are enough. Specifying these buildings too much would bring them closer together and cause the clear mist on the other bank to be lost.

Matter03

The sky changes rhythm from left to right

The little blue touches are more numerous above the reeds, then the cream and pink passages widen. This transition balances the dark mass of the foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 55 × 65.2 cm. It is kept at the Kunstmuseum Bern under inventory G 96.014 and classified Wildenstein 327.

Location01

The Seine basin in Argenteuil

Monet lived in Argenteuil from 1871 to 1878 and painted nearly two hundred paintings there. The river, gardens, bridges, factories and water sports offer him modern motifs accessible directly from his home.

Viewpoint02

The bank observed through the reeds

Rather than clearing the landscape, Monet keeps nearby vegetation in his field of vision. This framing gives the canvas an immediate character and highlights the difference between the tangible shore and the atmospheric village.

Collection03

Robert Vatter legacy at the Kunstmuseum Bern

The work entered the Kunstmuseum Bern in 1996 thanks to the legacy of Robert Vatter. It bears inventory G 96.014 and appears in the current collection route.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain irregular opening of reeds to the right.
  • Maintaining the church on a very small scale.
  • Gradually make the smoke disappear into the sky.
  • Preserve roses and creams from the atmosphere.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This soft landscape is suitable for a bright bedroom, office or living room. A discreet gray blue, light wood or bronze frame accompanies the reeds; a cream or pearl gray wall reveals the nuances of the sky.
