After the storm: shepherd and flock, F42Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Look at the work

The raised stick restarts the herd under a still heavy sky

The shepherd is placed slightly to the left of the center. His black silhouette stands out against the light strip of the horizon; the oblique stick he holds in the air is the clearest gesture of the entire scene.

The sheep fill the lower half of the large panoramic format. A few heads turn, a black sheep appears on the left and the tight legs create a frieze of vertical lines.

After the Storm, also called Shepherd with a Flock of Sheep, F42/JH517, is a 66.3 × 128.6 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in September 1884. It is kept at the Museo Soumaya in Mexico.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The scene belongs to Van Gogh's training period. The palette of earth, the format of frieze and the simplification of the animals give more importance to the collective rhythm than to the anatomical detail.

01

The clear horizon separates two dark masses

A thin turquoise white stripe runs across the entire canvas between the ground and the clouds. It brings out the shepherd and gives the scene the idea of a lull.

02

The herd becomes a single moving form

The backs fit together like waves and the legs form a tight curtain. The few heads oriented differently are enough to avoid repetition.

03

The Black Sheep creates a narrative counterpoint

Placed near the shepherd, it stands out from the group by its color and its position. The museum file highlights the possible reading of the pastor attentive to the animal being pushed aside.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F42/JH517, the dating of September 1884 and the exceptionally large format identify this painting by the Museo Soumaya, distinct from the copies after Millet made by Van Gogh in Saint-Rémy.

Order

The canvas was part of a decorative project for Antoon Hermans

Van Gogh was to create six paintings for a dining room. Instead of a literal Last Supper, he developed rural subjects where work and nature took on a moral significance.

Training

The painter still seeks to master the human figure

The shepherd is deliberately simplified, but his posture, arm and staff organize the action. Van Gogh wants to progress towards more complex rural scenes.

Title

"After the Storm" describes the light of the landscape

The sky remains dark and menacing, but the bright band of the horizon indicates that the storm is receding and the herd can resume its journey.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the panoramic format, the brown sky, the turquoise horizon, the dark silhouette of the shepherd, his staff, the black sheep and the ocher mass of the flock.

  • The light strip that crosses the horizon
  • The stick raised diagonally
  • The black silhouette of the shepherd
  • The dark sheep to the left of the group
  • The repetition of the legs under tight bodies
