Ships in a W259 porthand painted reproduction

Large sailing ships stand in a port basin, their masts, yards and ropes cutting through a pink gray sky. The dark hull of the central boat occupies almost the entire width, while smaller boats tighten to the right. Around 1873, Monet probably described Le Havre by blues, purples, greens and pinks rather than the gray expected of an overcast day.

Masts erect a forest of lines above fragmented water

The main ship is seen almost in profile, with a dark bow on the left and a long hull resting on the water line. Its masts rise to the upper edge and support folded sails, yards and numerous ropes.

On the right, the silhouettes of the buildings overlap and decrease. At the bottom, the reflections are painted in horizontal blue, white, green and pink lines. A few darker vertical passages connect the hulls to the water.

The port appears complex without being carefully described: the parallel touches at the same time assemble the water, the reflections and the silent movement of the ships.

The MFA describes a range of muffled blues, purples, greens and pinks. Monet vibrates these pigments side by side instead of melting them into a uniform grayness.

Bluish blacks, grays, greens and browns describe the bow, flank and water line. A single dark tone would remove its structure.

The native port of Le Havre

The MFA documentation probably places the scene in Le Havre, where Monet has known basins, tall ships and industrial transformations since childhood.

From Durand-Ruel to Denman Waldo Ross

After a stint at Durand-Ruel, the painting was purchased by the Boston collector Denman Waldo Ross in 1897. He donated it to the museum in 1906.

The prefix 06 recalls the year of entry into the MFA collections. The painting belongs to one of the most important Monet sets kept outside France.
