A path descends towards the city and the horizon

The path starts from the lower edge and narrows towards two small silhouettes, one blue, the other lighter. On the left, a vertical field of grass and a bushy hedge form a soft mass; on the right, darker bushes accompany the slope.

In the middle, the plain is treated in very light strips where houses, trees and land merge. A high chimney or bell tower punctuates the distance. Above, the sky occupies more than half of the canvas, with warm grays, pale blues and a few cream clouds.

The path is not just a rural motif: it organizes the passage of the viewer, from the nearby grasses to the almost abstract expanse of the plain.

A perspective guided by the trail

Its curve and narrowing lead immediately towards the two figures, then towards the plain. The irregular edges, however, avoid too geometric a construction.

A deliberately erased horizon

Distant shapes lose their contours and contrasts. This reduction gives breadth to the sky and makes atmospheric distance noticeable.

Two complementary plant masses

The left hedge is wider and darker; the right shrubs rise more into the sky. Together they frame the central opening without closing it.

The base of the Ministry of Culture identifies this painting signed and dated "72 Claude Monet" under the references MNR 855 and Wildenstein 220.

First known title01

Pochade in Argenteuil

Durand-Ruel bought the painting from Monet in November 1872 under this title, before selling it in 1884 as Les Coteaux de Sannois.

Date02

1872, at the start of the stay in Argenteuil

Monet has just settled in the town and explores the contrasts between fields, urbanized plains, traffic routes and still rural distances.

Status03

National Recovery Museums, MNR 855

Found after the Second World War and entrusted to national collections, the work remains listed in order to continue the study of its provenance.
