From a hillside overlooking the Seine, Monet looks at Vétheuil like an assembly of diagonals: a slope covered with grass descends to the left, the river draws a clear curve to the right and the houses are arranged between the two. The vertical format removes almost any intermediate plane and abruptly brings the foreground closer to the distant village. This 80.96 × 65.09 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art under the number M.81.259.3. It corresponds to Wildenstein 603.
Look at the work
The left edge is occupied by a steeply inclined slope, covered with greens, reds and small floral touches. This mass leads towards the light roofs of Vétheuil, grouped around the church, while a blue-green hillside closes the horizon. The sudden oblique of the foreground gives the impression that the viewer is really standing on the slope.
On the right, the Seine describes a pale curve which goes around the village. Its bluish whites and atmospheric roses do not form a regular mirror: they respond to the colors of the sky with long, discontinuous touches. The absence of a real environment between the embankment and the houses compresses the space, then the ribbon of water reopens it towards the bottom.
LACMA brings this construction closer to the Japanese prints admired by Monet: vertical orientation, rigid diagonal in the foreground, erasure of the median plane and placement of the sky as well as the hills very far in the image.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
It crosses almost the entire height and makes the painter's elevated position felt. The houses are therefore not seen head-on from the other bank, but seized from a natural belvedere above the valley.
The light elbow runs along the right edge, bypasses the houses and then disappears. This liquid trajectory balances the dark slope and transforms the vertical format into a continuous path from the bottom to the horizon.
A few cream and orange rectangles are enough for facades and roofs. Their relative precision in the center contrasts with the loose grass in the foreground and keeps Vétheuil identifiable in a vibrant atmosphere.

The single image exactly represents inventory M.81.259.3. The official LACMA file measures 2,044 × 2,560 px; it is kept at its native definition, without artificial enlargement, and delivered in real WebP.
A softened slope would change the viewpoint and lose the steep depth effect reported by LACMA. Plants must follow its direction without forming a uniform border.
It separates the village from the right bank and constitutes the main breathing space of the canvas. Its reflections remain pearly, without becoming a homogeneous blue or a ribbon with too clear contours.
Red roofs, white walls and blue-gray shadows must remain distinct up close but come together at a distance. Their concentration forms the focus of the painting without architectural rigidity.
Documented benchmarks

The LACMA instructions emphasize this high position. Monet replaces the usual frontal view from Lavacourt with a dive where the nearby slope, the village and the river fit together almost without an intermediate plan.
Monet settled in the village in 1878. After Camille's death in 1879 and the collapse of the market for his paintings, in 1880 he multiplied local views while seeking to restore his situation with the merchants and the Salon.
The painting was not sold during the artist's lifetime. He passed to his son Michel, then through several Parisian and Californian collections before Howard Ahmanson Jr.'s donation to LACMA in 1981.
