Claude Monet · Fresselines · 1889 · W1234
A wooden bridge crosses the Creuse in front of the houses and the Vervy mill, squeezed between the fast water and purple slopes. Dated by the museum from 1889, this oil on canvas measuring 65.4 × 92.5 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under number 5026 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1234.

Look at the work
The footbridge intersects the foreground in a long diagonal. Behind it, the light facades and red roofs fit together at the foot of a steep relief. The river enters from the left, goes around the buildings then extends under the bridge.
Purple, blue and brown dominate the water and slopes; white walls and orange-red roofs concentrate the light. The light touches running across the river give a feeling of current rather than still reflection.
In W1234, the bridge is not a simple architectural detail: its diagonal connects the viewer to the small group of houses caught in the ravine.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The footbridge starts from the lower left edge and leads to the right bank. It crosses the horizontal movements of the water and stabilizes a very dense composition.
Roofs, gables and facades are built by a few colorful plans. Their clarity detaches them from the slope without interrupting the unity of the touch.
Slopes almost fill the background. The absence of a big sky accentuates the impression of a hamlet installed at the bottom of a rocky passage.

Only one exact image of W1234 is used. The real WebP measures 1,500 × 1,048 px and comes from the official visual of the Marmottan Monet Museum.
Its line must remain firm but not geometric. A footbridge that is too straight or too thick would crush the river and the houses.
The shadows are not black: blue, mauve and red-brown overlap. This richness maintains the depth of the ravine.
The white and light blue passages follow the current without forming a continuous band. Their rhythm gives the speed of the water.
Documented benchmarks
The Marmottan Monet museum documents Le Pont de Vervy, oil on canvas dated 1889, 65.4 × 92.5 cm, inventory 5026 and Wildenstein 1234.
The museum notice notes at the bottom left the inscription Claude Monet 88, while dating the work from 1889. This difference is part of the precise documentation of the painting.
The painting enters the museum with the legacy of the artist's son, a set which constitutes the heart of the Monet collection of the Marmottan museum.
Monet explored the Creuse valley in the spring of 1889 and also painted the confluences, ravines and the neighboring mill under several effects.
