À propos de l’œuvre

Plaine près d'Auvers, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Plain near AuversReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Under heavy clouds, the plain unfolds in green, yellow and blue bands. A few millstones punctuate the fields, while a very low line of trees accentuates the magnitude of the sky.

Look at the work

Fields plowed under the pressure of clouds

In the foreground, blue and green furrows open in a fan shape. Further on, bands of yellow and turquoise culture are punctuated by several orange millstones and a row of trees on the horizon.

The sky occupies almost half of the canvas. The white, gray and blue-purple clouds are painted in long curved touches; their movement responds to the multiple directions of the fields.

The plain is neither empty nor peaceful: each colored area follows its own current, and the opposition between furrows and clouds makes the gaze circulate throughout the canvas.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Neue Pinakothek preserves this work under the German title Ebene bei Auvers and inventory 9584. It is cataloged F782/JH2099.

01

A depth constructed in bands

Van Gogh superimposes furrows, plots, millstones and lines of trees. The alternating colors replace the classic perspective and lead the eye towards the very low horizon.

02

Clouds as second earth

The sky takes up the curves of the ground. The white and blue touches wrap around above the plain, creating a mass as material as the crops.

03

Grinding wheels as markers

The small ocher and yellow shapes break up the large cold expanses. They measure the distance and remind us that this landscape is a cultivated territory, not a wild nature.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Plaine near Auvers is an oil on canvas measuring 73.5 × 92 cm, painted in July 1890. It bears inventory 9584 and references F782/JH2099.

Title

Ebene bei Auvers

The Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen uses the German title Ebene bei Auvers, literally Plain near Auvers. This identification distinguishes the canvas from other fields painted during the same month.

Acquisition

Entered the collection in 1929

The museum notice indicates that the work was acquired on the art market in 1929. It bears the old number L 159 and the current inventory 9584.

Last period

The Auvers landscape format

Van Gogh painted the plain several times in June and July 1890. Here, the rectangular format gives as much weight to the changing sky as to the worked fields.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must keep the crop bands well separated, the network of furrows in the foreground, the small ocher accents of the millstones and the swirling material of the clouds.

  • The blue-green furrows that open in the foreground
  • The yellow and turquoise plots of the center
  • The small orange millstones distributed across the plain
  • White and purple clouds with curved touches
