Shoes, F331Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two worn shoes rest on an almost empty pink-brown background; open soles, sagging elastics and loose laces become concrete traces of a life already crossed.

Look at the work

Two ordinary wear-bearing objects

A shoe is lying across the foreground, the sole and deformed leather pointing towards the viewer. The second stands up behind her, slightly turned, which forms a compact but asymmetrical group.

Dark greens, browns and grays are surrounded by red or bluish lines. The pink background is worked by wide diluted passages; no tables or rooms are described, so all attention remains on the folds and wounds of the leather.

The Van Gogh Museum dates this still life from January - February 1887. Its notice highlights the worn soles, the loose elastic and Van Gogh's taste for objects that bear the marks of life.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

F331/JH1235 is painted in oil on cardboard and measures 32.7 × 40.8 cm. The material combines opaque accents with a paint heavily diluted with gasoline.

01

A diagonal of worn leather

The lying shoe crosses the bottom of the image and leads to the higher upper. This overlay avoids the frontal and static presentation of a classic still life.

02

Visible essence painting

Van Gogh strongly dilutes certain areas with turpentine. A drip behind the right shoe makes this process almost readable to the naked eye.

03

A muted but colorful range

Leather isn't just brown: olive green, gray, pink and reddish lines shape the folds. The warm background brings out the volumes without theatrical shadow.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum's support, process and references distinguish F331 from other pairs of shoes painted by Van Gogh in Paris.

Support

An oil on cardboard

Unlike the large canvases of Arles, this small Parisian study is directly painted on a rigid cardboard support.

Process

Gasoline paint

The diluted color produces fluid passages close to watercolor and reveals a run on the back of the right shoe.

Subject

Objects marked by use

Deformed soles, elastics and stems give the pair a biographical presence without any owner being represented.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must keep the asymmetry of the two shoes, the gray-green leather, the colored contours and the alternation between transparent juices and small thick touches.

  • The worn sole in the foreground
  • The stem sagging on the left
  • The straight shoe more vertical
  • Red lines in the contours
  • The pink-brown background with fluid passages
