Signed and dated Claude Monet 82 lower right, this oil on canvas of 57 × 80 cm is kept at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek under the number MIN 1753 and corresponds to Wildenstein 792.

Look at the work

Shadows float on the water while the cliff remains suspended in pink light

The sea occupies more than half of the canvas and advances to the viewer in long curved touches. The cliff is thrown back into the right part of the horizon; its beach and its walkers form only a narrow strip.

In the foreground, the deep blues outline several gray areas amid brighter greens, yellows and whites. The pink-purple sky is much calmer, which reinforces the movement of the water.

Monet does not paint shadow as an absence of light: he gives it a distinct blue color that moves across the surface and reveals each wave change.
